If we use started, then what did it start (there`s no object). There must be an object in this sense, like when we say: it started moving/its journey, etc.
In the conversation on TB P.118 line 13. It says:
The first line opened in 1989

It's been a long time (for me, of course) to enjoy discussions with a most knowlegeable teacher!
I would like to add that if we say, "The first metro line started...", I think STARTED here is an intransitive verb. But in this sense it refers to the physical nature of the line not the time of opening it.
For example we can say, At first, the metro line started in Helwan and ended in Al Marg. After the first extension, it now starts in Helwan and ends in New Al Marg (Al Marg Al Gadida)
